विश्व के महानतम गणितज्ञों में से एक श्रीनिवास अयंगर रामानुजन के जीवन और कार्य से रामानुजन महाविद्यालय ने प्रेरणा ग्रहण किया है। रामानुजन महाविद्यालय समर्पण, प्रयत्न और प्रतिबद्धता के मूल्यों का पालन करता है, यही भावना दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के आदर्श वाक्य- 'निष्ठा,' 'धृति' और 'सत्यम' में निहित है।
रामानुजन महाविद्यालय, जिसे पहले देशबंधु महाविद्यालय (सांध्य) के नाम से जाना जाता था। इसकी स्थापना वर्ष 1958 में भारत सरकार के पुनर्वास मंत्रालय द्वारा स्वर्गीय लाला देशबंधु गुप्ता की याद में की गई थी; वे एक देशभक्त थे जिन्होंने अपना जीवन राष्ट्रीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के लिए समर्पित कर दिया था। यह महाविद्यालय वर्ष 1972 से दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के सानिध्य में चल रहा है, जो विश्वविद्यालय अनुदान आयोग (यूजीसी) द्वारा 100% वित्त पोषित है। महाविद्यालय ने वर्ष 1994 में 'को-एड' शिक्षण की शुरुवात की। वर्ष 2010 में देशबंधु महाविद्यालय (सांध्य) का नाम बदल कर रामानुजन महाविद्यालय कर दिया गया था और वर्ष 2012 से रामानुजन महाविद्यालय एक पूर्ण दिवसीय महाविद्यालय बन गया था।
पिछले दशक से, महाविद्यालय अभूतपूर्व विकास के पथ पर है। नए-नए पाठ्यक्रमों की शुरूआत और नवीनतम सुविधाओं से संपन्न, तेजी से निर्मित हो रहे बुनियादी ढांचे के साथ यह महाविद्यालय भविष्य की चुनौतियों के लिए तैयार है।
